Brown noticed, a corpse in the relaxed position portrayed on the shroud could not be positioned such that its hands cover its genitals as portrayed. The right arm and fingers of the right hand in the image appear to have been elongated to make this possible. These anatomical anomalies and inconsistent proportions were suggested to be deliberate artistic interventions to preserve the modesty of the man depicted. Félix Ares noted a long list of anatomical anomalies in 2006. He found the arms asymmetrical, the fingers too long, the shoulders too small and the posture impossible. The feet are inconsistently depicted, with the front image showing them upwards while the back image shows the right sole resting against the cloth, which could not happen with the leg outstretched as depicted. Facial features are misplaced, and the hair is depicted at the same height and with the same force as the face, whereas on a horizontal body the hair should have rested on the ground at a much lower height. The body does not show either the natural curve of the back, nor pressure on prominent muscles from resting on a surface; Ares also theorized the empty space between the heads of both images should not exist, but show the top of the head. Furthermore, by measuring it three-dimensionally, he calculated the head to be impossibly small, beyond any known case of microcephaly. Ares believed the image resembled the most a Gothic artistic representation, noting that "if we were to transfer this set of anomalies and deformities to a living being, we would obtain a grotesque scarecrow".

Irwin at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) during World War II realized that plasticity must play a significant role in the fracture of ductile materials. In ductile materials (and even in materials that appear to be brittle), a plastic zone develops at the tip of the crack. As the applied load increases, the plastic zone increases in size until the crack grows and the elastically strained material behind the crack tip unloads. The plastic loading and unloading cycle near the crack tip leads to the dissipation of energy as heat. Hence, a dissipative term has to be added to the energy balance relation devised by Griffith for brittle materials. === Other interventions === A 2024 review found that fecal microbiota transplantation may reduce pain intensity and improve fatigue and quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia, but evidence was insufficient at that stage to support use. Research on gut microbiome links with FM continues. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has shown beneficial effects in treating chronic pain by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. However, treating fibromyalgia with hyperbaric oxygen therapy is still controversial, in light of the scarcity of large-scale clinical trials. In addition, hyperbaric oxygen therapy raises safety concerns due to the oxidative damage that may follow it. An evaluation of nine trials with 288 patients in total found that HBOT was more effective at relieving fibromyalgia patients' pain than the control intervention. In most of the trials, HBOT improved sleep disturbance, multidimensional function, patient satisfaction, and tender spots. Negative outcomes (predominantly mild barotrauma (air pressure effect on ear or lung) that could be resolved spontaneously) were experienced by 24% of the patients, but they were not prevented from completing the treatment regimen, and no serious side effects, complications, or deaths were reported.
